Lowrance Spotlight Scan Reviews

When you’re scouting for spots to set up your rod and reel, fishfinders can make a huge difference. Traditional flash fishfinders have fallen by the wayside, replaced by advanced LCD-screen fishfinders which provide high-quality color images for a reasonable price.

We’ve seen many technological advancements in the hunting industry in the past decade, and with excellent systems like sideways-looking or multi-frequency fishfinders, we’re so excited to introduce you to one of the best models on the market.

In this article, we will introduce you to the Lowrance’s newest fishfinder, the SpotlightScan. It features an upgraded scanning system with new technological upgrades.

Lowrance Spotlight Scan: General Features

The Spotlight Scan sounded somewhat gimmicky when we heard about it. The Lowrance took the original structure of their Structure Scan Technology, moved it by 30 degrees, and gave it a forward-looking 455/800 kHz beam.

They then mounted it onto a trolling motor. This unit isn’t exactly new in terms of design, as you can find most of these features on previous models.

The Spotlight Scan is a high-level scanner which provides you with photograph-like imaging of the best fishing areas located in your chart plotter display. This allows you to focus on fishing in places where you’re more likely to make a catch.

This is a huge time saver, as you’ll know the exact location of the fish, and with the broadband sounder technology, you’ll have a clear view of what’s under the boat at all times.

With the HD Gen2 Touch and the HDS Gen2 Display, you’ll have complete control of the system. Changing and controlling the direction and scanning speed can be done by using a foot pedal which has been installed with the system. This way you don’t have to make additional adjustments on the display.

If you’re worried about how difficult it may be to install the system, then you can rest assured that it’s quite simple.

The Spotlight Scan features a do-it-yourself design where you’ll be able to easily install the system by connecting the Spotlight scan NMEA 2000 sensor to a trolling motor foot control.

Using the Lowrance Spotlight Scan will enable you not only to see what’s in the area but also provide you with up-close scans of what’s directly underneath you. The ability to see what’s ahead and what’s around the boat means that it’s easy to identify where to spend your time fishing.

While we would love to tell you only the positives of this system, to make it a fair review we also have to tell you the drawbacks. This can help you narrow down if the Spotlight Scan is for you and your boat.

The biggest problem with the system is that you’ll need to use it for specific boats which feature a bow-mounted trolling motor. This can be useful if you have a bass boat, bay boat, ora compatible flatboat.

Another drawback to this system is that it doesn’t save your previous search images, also called your history. The system works by painting a picture as you move, but the image is static, which means you will have to move again.

This, in turn, erases your old shot and creates a new one which is overlaid right over the old one. This is a downside because some fishfinders can sense up to 40 feet away, but that’s usually irrelevant for most users.

The lack of history can be a major drawback for some because it’s quite confusing to get used to. We’ve found that it’s good for the fact that you’ll know where the fish are when you turn the spotlight scan on and use the mark feature.

However, you’ll have to look at the fishfinder and try and judge the history on your own.

The system will display an old picture instead of a current one if you haven’t rescanned the area, which means you’ll have to keep track of what’s new information and what’s old. This could be a potential deal-breaker if you have a hard time doing this.

  • Requires bow-mounted trolling motor
  • No history
  • Constant attention required to track all fish in area

The Verdict -Lowrance Spotlight Scan Review

When it comes to purchasing or upgrading to a new system, it can sometimes be a little hectic. Previous customers who have used the Lowrance Spotlight Scan can tell you that this product is extremely versatile and will make a massive impact on your next trip.

Customers also applaud the system’s ease of installation without the need to hire a professional.

Another highlight of the system is that it can help you save time because of the reliable feedback. With other units you may find that the scanning system doesn’t work as fast, hence wasting valuable fishing time.

This unit can work in the dark and can be used to track fish up to 150 feet under the water.

The Spotlight Scan delivers a new level of controlled surround scan views which produce images on the HDS Gen2 display to guide your fishing.

The system also points out nonliving objects, even in the dark, and can help delineate the structure of the fish, making it a valuable asset when it comes to productive fishing.

Anglers will save more time when they’re out on the water because this product provides them with productive fishing areas. It will help you create a more effective approach without scaring away the fish.

We hope that this Lowrance Spotlight Scan review has provided you with the information you need to decide whether this system is right for your needs.
